A note for this time of year...
This time of year used to make me feel uneasy.
Not in an obvious dramatic way. More like a quiet heaviness that would creep in when I realised the year was ending and I would start mentally tallying everything I did not finish.
Another year gone. Another set of days I cannot get back. And that familiar question would pop up...What do I actually have to show for it?
For a long time I treated time like it had hard edges. The year starts here. The year ends there. New year new slate new version of me.
But the longer I live the more I realise time does not really work like that.
There is just time. And what we do with it.
I am not suddenly a different person because the calendar flips. I am the same person I was yesterday as I am today. Maybe a little wiser. Maybe a tiny step further along. But not transformed. Not reborn. Not behind either.
And I think that matters more than we give it credit for.
Because if you feel like you did not do enough this year it does not mean you have failed. It does not mean you need to start again from scratch on January 1.
You just keep going.
My mum has always said “Carry on Regardless” and it is something I come back to often. It is even engraved on a keychain I use every day.
Your goals do not expire because the year ends. That thing you are working towards does not need a clean start date or a dramatic reset.
You can begin anytime.
You can pause.
You can pick it back up when life allows.
We place so much pressure on finishing things by an arbitrary deadline. And when we do not meet it we question the goal instead of the deadline.
Why did you need to lose the weight by the end of the year if learning how to do it properly simply takes longer?
Why does a course or a plan suddenly lose its value because life asked more of you this year?
This is where that all or nothing thinking sneaks in. And it shows up everywhere.
I like to think of this season as the in between.
Not the end. Not the beginning. Just the middle. Where most of life actually happens.
Your goals are a lot like a savings account. Some days you can add a lot. Other days you add very little. Some days you just keep it open.
Every deposit still counts.
As long as you are contributing it does not really matter how fast you get there.
A few thoughts to leave you with as we move into another lap around the sun.
"Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming."
"Slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be."
"The top of one mountain is the bottom of the next. So just keep climbing."
Just a few thoughts to carry with you as the year turns,
Cassie x
